Not only is Ashtabula County home of the longest covered bridge in the United States The Smolen Gulf Bridge, it also is home to the shortest, The West Liberty Covered Bridge. The bridge at 18 feet long holds the record for the shortest driveable covered bridge in the United States.
In 2008 the Ohio public works needed to replace the crumbling culvert on west liberty street in Geneva Ohio that Cowles Creek flowed through. Since the construction of the Smolen Gulf Bridge was coming to a close they decided it would be cheaper and would create more tourism to construct the shortest covered bridge in the United States instead of just replacing the culvert. Funding for the project was limited so they received a lot of community support for the project Including donations, supplies & labor. Construction Students At the Local vocational school ACJVS (now known as A-Tech) helped Construct the bridge as their senior project.
The West Liberty Covered Bridge constructed of locally grown lumber from oak, maple & poplar trees. The bridge is featured as part of the Ashtabula County Barn Quilt Trail
The Bridge also has a little free library and a community food pantry. West Liberty Covered Bridge is a great addition to the many beautiful covered bridges in Ashtabula county. The bridge is also a great showcase of the spirit and sense of community there is in Ashtabula county.
