The Red Eagle Distillery In Geneva Ohio was opened in 2012 as one of the first legal whiskey distilleries in the state of Ohio since prohibition. The distillery is housed in a historic barn that was built in the late 1880s. Used for farming, the barn was also rumored to once have been used to distill spirits during prohibition and beyond. The distillery is located in the heart of the Grand River Valley wine region nestled right next to their sister business South River Winery, which features an 80-acre vineyard.
The inside of the distillery boasts all original wood that was painstakingly sanded and polyurethaned. New floors and a bar were installed as well. Insulation and metal siding were added to the outside of the building, but you can still see the original siding on the inside. A lot of the decor inside of the distillery were items that were found in the old barn before the restoration began.
All of the Red Eagle’s Spirits are distilled from locally sourced ingredients. The different spirits distilled include Brandy, Rye Whiskey, Bourbon, Vodka & an Ohio Red Maple Spirit. The vodka and brandy are made from grapes grown on site. The red maple spirit is made from Ohio maple syrup tapped from trees at Bissel Maple Farm located in Jefferson Ohio. The rye whiskey and the bourbon is made from rye, corn and other grains milled at the Jefferson Milling Co. also in Jefferson Ohio.
The distillery also includes a full cocktail menu, 10 craft beers on tap and a fully stocked whiskey bar.
The only food the Distillery offers is Pretzels but you are more than welcome to bring your own picnic or grab a takeout pizza from the nearest pizza joint on your way.
Also if you happen to be there on a weekday one of the bartenders likes to bring her pup, Gigi in during her shifts so make sure you say hi to her.
