Berry’s Restaurant is pretty much a landmark for the town of Norwalk. This gem of a restaurant is housed in a historic building that was constructed in 1867 and was a hotel called the St. Charles Hotel. The hotel also had a third-floor ballroom that was later removed because of safety concerns. Over the years the building had been sectioned off and served many purposes such as a cigar shop, singer sewing machine shop, barber shop and a confectionary kitchen.
The Berry family purchased the building in 1944 and opened it as a restaurant in 1946. Since then Berry’s Restaurant has been family owned for 3 generations.
Stepping into Berry’s is like stepping back in time, the room that you enter into looks like a classic 50’s soda fountain but the rest of the restaurant has more of the Victorian era vibe. Everywhere you look there are photos and artifacts that tell the history of the city of Norwalk and the building itself.
Berry’s is an upscale casual restaurant that serves American food. Berry’s is well known for their Sunday brunch buffet that is all you can eat for $12.99 and that includes your drink as well. We arrived around 11 AM for the brunch everything was fresh and not in short supply. I enjoyed the homemade orange pound cake, fresh coffee and the Caprese salad most. I tried a little bit of everything and it was all delicious. There is something for everyone. They even had a giant slab of roast beef that they hand-carved for you if you wanted some of it. Not to mention the staff was very friendly, informative, helpful and attentive.
Berry’s also features a full bar known as the Dinky Pub that is open late Monday-Saturday. The pub mimics what the pub in the original hotel would have been like. Outside they have an outdoor patio for dining in the summer months.
if you are looking for a place to grab some food with Victorian-era charm and a rich history Berry’s is the place for you.
